Ileys Community Association

Serving the community

About Us

Ileys Community Association (CA) was established in November 2007 and is based in the town of Smethwick, in the Borough of Sandwell. Ileys CA is a not for profit organisation, that provides support primarily, though not exclusively to the local Somali Community, refuges, asylum seekers and newly arrived communities.

Ileys CA strives to provide a wide range of information, advice and support in a culturally and linguistically sensitive manner, this extends to interpretation and translation support.

Ileys CA is based within the Soho/Victoria Ward in Smethwick, where the majority of the Somali Community lives. Which is one the most deprived wards in Sandwell scoring 53.40 on Multiple Deprivation Index (Office of National Statistics 2011). Somali families tend to be large families and therefore generally live in overcrowded accommodation. Most Somali families generally have recently arrived in the UK, coming directly from Somali as Asylum seekers or from EU countries, 50% of the children are in single parent households and around 80% receive free school meals.

Our Main objectives are:

• To provide a comprehensive referral service for the community and to assist our service users to access mainstream service provision in housing, health, education and other services

• To support the integration of the Somali community into British society and enhance community cohesion

• To support the educational needs of refugee children

• To empower and support people to influence local service provision and decision making

Since its inception - through sheer hard work and determination Ileys has managed to employ 2 members of staff and recruit several dedicated volunteers.

A big THANK YOU ! to all staff, management committee, volunteers, funders, supporters and the local community who have made the achievements of the last couple of years possible.
